Easter Residential Blog #1
There is a familiar buzz around the KAN APP Easter residential as we come to the end of the first 24 hours, and it has been great to see all of our students getting back in to the swing of the programme and enjoying each other’s company, as well as challenging themselves in the lessons and other sessions that have taken place so far.
This residential marks a watershed moment for the APP and the AAF as it is the last residential in which our year 13, and original, cohort will take part. Spurred on by the University offers they have received, the class of 2013 are working hard towards their exams, and have received one to one or small group tuition this morning on two of their A level subjects, with more to come over the course of the weekend. Yesterday saw an introduction to the presentation task they will complete on Monday, and a session with the Unreasonables on how to prepare for University.
Year 12 have also enjoyed subject specific lessons this morning, reflecting the bespoke nature of the programme that has developed to meet their needs. That said, and especially given the fact that many are not doing exams this summer, a key element of what the APP can offer remains the extension and introduction to new subjects, and this has been provided by so far in the form of Classics and International Relations.
A pleasing feature of the APP is the way in which it is able to attract staff to return time after time, and as ever we thank all those who take part in what we are trying to achieve, especially on a Saturday! Gavin Henry from Sevenoaks, Steve Burns, formerly of Tonbridge and now of Skinners’ School, and Stephen Pursey from SKA are three such APP stalwarts, and each have taught the year 11 so far, with a focus on the core subjects in which our students will be taking their GCSEs
Last but not least, the year 10 cohort have also enjoyed a full on start to the week, with English, Maths, Spanish and Science on the timetable so far, a lesson which involved lots of fire (see our twitter for the video evidence) and went down extremely well. The Unreasonables also worked with the year 10 yesterday, putting on a session on having an opinion, and as ever, the way in which this encouraged our students to put themselves forward and participate was great to see.
The students on the APP benefit enormously from the outside speakers who talk about their experiences and seek to inspire based on their own journey, and celebrity chef Marcus Wareing fitted the bill perfectly in this regard. Overall then, a hectic but fantastic start to the 2017 Easter residential – next update tomorrow!
