Year 10 and Year 12 Visit University of Sussex (Easter Residential Blog #3)
The Year 10 and Year 12 cohorts visited the University of Sussex today, a fantastic experience as they set their sights on applying to and achieving a place at a University.
Given the momentous nature of today for our year 13 and the programme on the whole, the third blog is in two parts, with the run down of what the year 13 have been up to on their final day with us available here.
While the year 11 remained at Sevenoaks, breaking up their diet of revision with an excellent art session this afternoon, with the year 13 the year 10 and year 12 visited the University of Sussex. A lecture on life at University was well received by our students before a campus tour, the opportunity to experience Sussex University in the glorious spring sunshine and a taster seminar from the University of Sussex History Department, specifically on the origins of the Israel-Palestine conflict. While many of our students had very little prior knowledge of this subject they were very willing to have a go at answering questions and providing contributions, and they performed excellently in the source based task!
Clive Grant, an in-house lawyer at Shell, spoke to our students last night about his experiences and tips for success, in a talk entitled ‘who do you think you are, and what do you want to do with your life?’ – great questions for our students to seek to understand!
This afternoon we were visited by former British Ambassador to Japan Sir David Warren who spoke about his career, geopolitics and the UK’s current standing in the world. The Q and A that followed was one of the most in-depth sessions ever witnessed on an APP residential, and the students were clearly hugely engaged by what David had to say! David was sent our way due to a fantastic link-up we have established with Speakers for Schools, and given the success of both David’s talk and Nikki King the other evening, we will be looking to work closely with them well in to the future!
The bespoke nature of the programme means the year 11 and year 13 have now left us to return to school, but there is plenty ahead for our remaining year 10 and year 12 between now and Wednesday. More tomorrow!
